On assignment: photographing the independent bookstores of the Oregon coast

I was recently commissioned to photograph a few of Oregon’s North Coast bookstores for a feature story on this corner of the world’s quirky cadre of independent book shops. Over the course of a week, I photographed my way through five stores from Manzanita to Seaside, making a few new friends and picking up some summer reading recommendations along the way. As it turned out, the task also required the consumption of a few gallons of black coffee and the ill-advised purchase of several new-used paperbacks … Yes, I’ve previously vowed not to buy ANY MORE new books until I’ve chipped away at the growing pile of half-finished tomes teetering atop my nightstand, but I am a sucker for a great story. Here are a few outtakes from my assignment.
